Oregon Wine Board Vineyard Atlas

Contract work for the Oregon Wine Board

A map of every vineyard in Oregon, and the data to understand them. We ran a statewide analysis to find each one, outlined it, and set it against the climate, terrain, and soils that shape it. A portal lets wineries add what only they know, building a database of Oregon vineyards unlike anything that has existed before.

More info
  • Finds every vineyard. A machine learning algorithm trained on the fingerprint of a vineyard scans the whole state from above using high-resolution 4-band imagery. The map starts from a complete inventory rather than simply updating old maps.
  • Traces the true footprint. Each vineyard is mapped to its actual boundary rather than a dot on a map, and placed within the AVA that surrounds it.
  • Adds the ground, climate and soil. Elevation, slope, aspect, long-term climate normals, vintage-by-vintage weather and soil data sit alongside each vineyard, so the conditions it grows in are on the same map as the vineyard itself.
  • Opens it to wineries. Through a grower portal, vintners and producers claim their vineyards and add the details only they know, the things no analysis can see from above.
  • Builds one shared record. The statewide analysis and the wineries' own input feed a single database, where every site in Oregon can be understood and compared on the same footing.

AVA Flyover

Willamette Valley AVA tour, built for the Willamette Valley Wineries Association

A guided flight through the Willamette Valley and the 11 AVAs nested inside it. On a paper map the valley's appellations are a tangle of overlapping boundaries. The flyover turns them into a tour you scroll through, one place at a time, so you can see how the valley fits together.

More info
  • Starts wide. The tour opens on the globe and flies down into Oregon, so you begin with where the valley sits in the world.
  • Flies AVA by AVA. As you scroll, the camera moves north to south over 3D terrain, from the Tualatin Hills to the Lower Long Tom, and outlines each AVA as it arrives.
  • Profiles each stop. Every AVA gets a short card with its key figures: the year it was established, how many wineries and vineyards it holds, and the grapes planted there.
  • Shows the lay of the land. Seen from the air, the hills, ridges and gaps that separate one AVA from the next become obvious in a way a flat map can't show.

Atlases & data tools

Behind these are several more maps and tools in development and private beta, from regional atlases to data tools. They'll join this page as they get formally announced.

We're constantly searching for the cutting edge, and always looking for beta testers. Heard about something we're working on and want an early look, or have something you'd like us to build? Let us know.
